I have an S12 universal that I would like to try a minimalist copedent on. I've long been tempted to try b0b's 10 string D6 hybrid 4 & 4 that is detailed on his b0b's blog page. Since that copedent is 10 string, and I have a 12 to work with, what, how, and where would suggest as to the best use of the 2 extra strings? |

How many Pedals, Knee Levers does your guitar have?
Most 12U tunings need 7 Pedals 5 Knee Levers to set up the tuning.
In 2017, When I made the dive into the 12U tuning, I searched and found, Jeff Newman, Sierra, Carl Dixons Excel, and BMI tunings. I chose Jeff Newman's, Because he has some lessons on 12U tuning. A copy of the lesson was in the case when I bought my first 12U guitar.
I have not got serious into the B6th side of the tuning yet, The 9 B-10 G#-11 E strings really expands the E9th side of the tuning.
Good Luck with your choice, Happy Steelin. |

Thanks Bobby
I've played Jeff's tuning for 40 plus years with 7 pedals 5 KL. As I said, considering a minimalist tuning. Take a look at some of b0b's ideas in his "b0b's blog" under links on this forum. I like his D6 Hybrid with 4 and 4. He clearly specifies,,,,Hybrid , NOT universal. ,,no 9th side or 6th side,,one tuning. |

Maybe have a look at b0b’s Williams 12-string C6. It’s 2 Am pentatonic scales on strings 10-1 with low C and F on 11 & 12.

For a D6 copedent, the open strings would be (low to high)
D-G-A-B-D-E-F#-A-B-D-E-F# (or re-entrant F#-E on top). The D6 4&4 configuration might work with that as well as it did on his C6 5&5. |

I've experimented with the D6 minimalist approach.
In my understanding, Bob's hybrid D6 was indeed an exercise in economy and resourcefulness, with the goal of having useful E9 and C6 type voicings on a 10 string guitar that has relatively minimal pedals.
In terms of an E9 perspective, The 9th and 7th strings are left off.
From a C6 angle, there is no low root string....
For a D tuning that would be a C and and E in the mid/lower register as well a low D.
Bringing a couple of those elements back in to the tuning might be something to consider.
Setting up a 12 string version sounds interesting. I'd think it would be getting closer to the Cox D13 tuning at that point... |
