My Roland Cube 80XL amps have a quarter-inch line out on the back.

I can run a guitar cable from that output to a mixer and it sounds pretty good.

One time, on stage, the mixer was too far away from my amp; so, I ran a short guitar cable to a DI box. From the DI box, I ran a low impedance microphone cable over to the mixer. I do believe it sounded better than using just a guitar cable.

Since then, I placed a Sennheiser e 609 microphone in front of the speaker, instead of using the line out. I could hear yet another improvement.

My imagination? Flakey old ears?

I tried the guitar from the preamp out on my NV400. Hated the sound. Tried a DI box with low impedence out to mixer. Again not happy. Since then, I have been using an e609. The preamp out was too dry. Love the sound that the speaker adds.

I mic my Nashville 112 with a e 609, much better sound.

I have done the same with my Fender Steel King, with the same results.

The line out has a volume control, as well as a switch to choose between pre- and post- EQ.

I prefer using the e 609.

I often use the Headphone Out on my Cube Street as a direct line for recording, but never on stage. The Cube has excellent reverb and tone so it's a natural for tracking, but when it's show time it's the Webb and a Senn e906.

I prefer the e906 for its flatter response, i.e. much less peaky at 3kHz than the e609. Neither compares with the original MD409 other than form factor, but both are superior to Shure's SM57 for mic'ing pedal steel amps IMHO.
