I have searched the archives for the answer to my question and could not find it. Can someone tell me the year the MSA sustain 2 classic ss was introduced. How can you tell if the guitar has a solid wood or plywood body. The MSA classic ss has 5 pedals and 4 knee levers. The guitar has been very very lightly played. So far so good for a newbie. |

The transition from formica to lacquer coated natural maple wood was during 1975. I don't think MSA put formica on any guitars after that time? My 1975 and 1976 came with Super Sustain pickups. The Super Sustain 2 came after that, but I'm not sure of the time? I can guess around 1980?
The Super Sustain 2 had a shorter keyhead which shortened the body length and a lower profile body. My wood necks are a full 1 inch thick. The wood body MSA's are keepers. With an upgrade pickup, they sound as good as any of the contemporary steel guitar brands. They are mechanically indestructible. _________________ 1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Revelation preamp, Carbon Copy Delay and Hall Of Fame Reverb, Crown XLS 1002, 2- 15" Eminence Wheelhouse speakers, ShoBud Pedal, Effects Pedals. 1949 Epiphone D-8. |

Although it was silk screened on the necks, Super Sustain was a designation for the pickups, not the guitar model.
The letters on the Classic SS body stood for Super Small not super sustain. I think early 80s, about the same time as the larger Classic XL or Vintage XL, maybe shortly thereafter.
The Classic SS is wood body under lacquer or poly? finish.
You can post the serial number on your guitar to this topic and there are people here who can tell you the year of MFG. from that. |
