I recently purchased the new Fishman AFX Pro EQ mini acoustic preamp. I'm very pleased with it, and thought I'd share some initial thoughts. I've been playing a lot recently thru a Fender Music Master 12-watt tube bass amp that I've had for many years. It has been slightly modded (and is, quite honestly, a bad-ass little amp). It only has a volume knob, and a "tone" knob (two knobs and the truth;-). So I wanted a small EQ for my small pedal board, so as to dial in different guitars thru the old tube amp.

The little Fishman Pro mini EQ has given me significant tone options: I've been running a dobro with a Nashville pickup and JD Aura thru it, and an Iseman Weissie with a seymour duncan mag mic as well. And my acoustic guitar with onboard pickup.

The sliders set at the middle setting, which has a detent sort of click, improved the sound immediately. With the dobro, I can dial out the metal chimey clicky sounds at the high end. The weissie came alive turning up the bass, but kept good presence at the high end. I won't go into all the features, I'll plug in a link for those, but so far, I'm really impressed. It is tiny, it is very visual in terms of the settings, and there are many well thought-out features, all for $120. I figured some of you might be interested.

Love the tiny size. I have owned an older Fishman Platinum Pro preamp (say that six times fast!) for a bunch of years. On the website it is stated that the little guy is based on the Platinum technology.

I’m wondering if it’s been improved over the larger earlier version, I will need to do some homework before plunking down 120 bucks for something that may or may not be a noticeable improvement. Actually, the older Platinum Pro hasn’t been my favorite anyway, there have been other brands that I have liked a little more.

Hi Mark, I’ve got several other EQ’s , the LR Baggs paracoustic DI, and the Tonebone (which JD used to promote), but to be honest I’ve never figured them out properly, either one. This little mini design from Fishman could have used me as a test case (“let’s make an easy EQ for the electronically challenged”). I immediately was able to dial in sound improvements. Plus my pedal board isn’t much bigger than a frisbee, so it fits very nicely. Sweetwater will let you try one ….but then again returns are kind of a pain. But anyhow, for what its worth, I really like it.
If you haven’t yet, check out the youtube rundown on it, on the link.
