I play a 25 1/2" S12 Keyless Excel (5x5), and I've always tried to do everything "under the hood" myself. I'm guessing most of us start out that way. Here's my current issue...

A few of my pedals (and levers) are the opposite of "smooth" feeling. A and B feel great. My C pedal on the other hand stops about halfway through as if it has a stop there, but theres only only two rods with the pedal so I don't know how that would be the case.

I've tried adjusting the rod length for both the 4th and 5th strings, but that hasn't helped. (Maybe I'm just not doing it right).

The E string seems to catch around a little flat of an F and then goes up to my F#.
The B string doesn't change pitch until that same point in the pedal travel where my E string catches, and then with additional pressure that change starts until getting up to my C#.

How do I get these changes to start at the same time and feel smooth?

I've looked on the forum and on the web for information to help, but everything I've found looks totally different from my excel which is just leaving me more confused.

I'm located north of the San Francisco Bay Area, so if anyone is local and wants to tinker around I'm totally into that idea! (Also buying the beverages.)

Thanks!

Sounds like a timing issue. Try moving your string 4, E - F# change, one or two bell crank holes away from the body so the pull on that string has more sweep. Then loosen the changer end tuning nut so that the string 4 and 5 pulls both start at the same time.

The pull rod on your B string needs to be positioned closer to the cross-shaft than it is now. The distance away from the cross-shaft regulates how much this particular pullrod will move when the pedal is pressed.

If the pedal feels short and stiff, chances are that the pullrods are too far away from the cross shaft.

If pedal feels long and too easy to press then pullrods are too close to the cross shaft.

I would adjust the position of the pullrod for the E string first to where the pedal action feels correct

Then find the correct position/hole for the pullrod for the B string so both pullrods raise pitches on both strings syncronized. The nylon tuner will only change when the string start to change pitch. It is how much that the pullrod moves back/forth that actually decide how much the string will raise /lower

Right now, your B string pullrod moves too much distance compared to the pullrod on the E string

Hope this helps so you can find the proper adjustment/fix so both strings start and stop at correct pitch at the same time.
