How about for the fun of it, trace our steps, if we can. As I was looking at some pictures from over the years this came to mind.
We don't need to know why we changed brands or why we do what we do.
List all the Pedal Steels you have owned then at the end which one or one's you own now. If there is ONE or two you wish you had back, list them.
for me ,from one to now.
For clarity, my list covers 1975 right up to today. Some guitars I owned for a few months , others for years.

Where do you guys get all the cash for those guitars?!?
I've owned a few...
S10 Emmons Starter/ 3 pedal, 1 knee (used) Burl mica
S10 Sho-Bud/ 6 pedal (used) Blonde
S10 Sierra/ 5 pedal, 4 knee (new) 1983 White mica
D10 Sierra/ 8 pedal, 4 knee (new) 1984 Rosewood Mica/Silver Anodized
D10 Emmons/ 8 pedal, 4 knee (used) mid 60's Flat Black
D10 Sierra/ 8 pedal, 5 knee (used) 1980's Rosewood Mica/Gold Anodized (current and only steel guitar)
Which one would I like to have back...why, no question, the Emmons, of course!!! That guitar had the classic, sweet push-pull tone, rang like a bell, a beautiful instrument. Fell on some hard times & had to sell it. _________________ Sierra Crown D-10

ZB Student Model
Quickly gave up on this and got a lap steel instead when I was completely overwhelmed by its complexity (3x1) and realised it wasn't the best thing for the Hank Snr, style stuff I wanted to play.
Fender 1000 (6 pedals)
By now, I'd been playing a Stringmaster T8 for a while and I saw this and liked that it was 8 strings. I mainly used the A6 neck with changes I worked out myself. I soon realised it was simply too heavy to carry around and sold it last year after it having spent most of the previous 20 years under the bed.
Fessenden 6-Shooter
I wanted to be able to play a few pedal steel licks on something easy to carry around and not taking up too much space on stage. I still use it from time to time - especially with a cajun band I play with sometimes (I used to use a 6 string lap steel for this gig). Originally with 2 pedals, I added a knee lever to raise the Es to Fs).
Sho~Bud 6139 (3x5)
Got this just over a year ago. Finally, after playing lap steel for a few years and messing on the Fessy, it started to all make sense.
No plans for any others.
I'd have the Fender back if someone else was going to carry it around for me. |

Ha ! Most of mine were NOT owned at the same time.
Mine were owned from 1975 up to 2016.
4 is the most I have ever had at one time, which is right now. In 6 months that could be easily be down to 2 or maybe 3.
I've always enjoyed acquiring Instruments for my entire life, I played them for a while, if I liked them they stayed around if I didn't they went off to a new home. I'm still doing it ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Emmons SD-10 (PP, never, never should have sold)
Carter Start (yeah, I know, all I could afford then)
Williams SD-10
Mullen SD-10
Nowhere as many as some folks but it is what it is.
Now I dearly love my Mullen, but would really like to have another Emmons, maybe a Legrand II or III.
Sigh, so many nice guitars out there and so little money....lol.... |

First steel: Sho-Bud Super Pro which I played for hundreds of gigs back when everyone was working as much as they wanted.
2nd: 81' Emmons D10 p/p
3rd: 81" Zum D10
4th and since then: Two more Zum D10's, a couple of Buds, and a lot more Emmons, including an SKH, 2 LGII's, LGIII, several student models, 2 D12's, bolt-on, several S10's and a bunch of D10's. I don't know - 20? The thing was, I was buying them whenever I ran across them years and years ago. I was fortunate to have a couple of push-pull guru/mechanics who did the necessary work to fix what former owners had messed up.
Now I've thinned the herd down to a few Emmons push-pulls. It got to be just too crazy. |

I've had 5:
1969 ZB Custom D-10 8/4 SOLD
1970's MSA Classic S-10, 3/4 SOLD
1974 Emmons D-10, 8/5 STILL HAVE
1952 Fender Deluxe 8 Lap STILL HAVE
2004 Mullen RP D-10 8/6 SOLD (SHOULDN'T HAVE)
2007 Excel Superb S12 E9/C6 with 8/6 STILL HAVE
I play through a 1979 Fender VibrOsonic, or a 1960 Fender Brown VibrAsonic. Both with JBLs.
Life is good.
The ZB was a PITA, but sounded nice. The MSA was mechanically nice, but just so boring.
Love my Emmons, the feel and the sound are incredible. Plus it's an Emmons.
I loved the Mullen, it was black and polished. I only sold it because it was the Mullen or the Emmons. I sold it to pay for the Excel.
the Excel is an engineering marvel, the sound is full and even (has a Tru-Tone) and the E9/C6 lever is really the best of both worlds in a small compact package. The only thing I may not be gushy about is the ergonomics of it. It's just a by-product of it being a compact S-12...I think it felt weird mostly because I was used to the Emmons and the Mullen.
Anyway, I love it and keep it to this day, alongside the PushPull. |
