Beginners Notes #555-Chickin Pickin
There has been some discussion on this subject lately, here, there and elsewhere!
I believe it was pointed out that quite a few of the steel guitar greats were
exceptionally good at it and even named as, oh such and so was the best ever at it
or the next was. Well just to set the record straight, I'm not. But I can do it and
I'll even try to show you how. But first a few points. 1st, it won't sound as good
as a tele whacker can do it. 2nd, the average listener won't know the difference.
3rd, you have to start out slow. Say that again, you have to start slow and build your
muscle memory so it just happens.
Notes: (T)=Thumb, (1)=First Finger, (2)=Middle Finger. This is how I approach it.
A bit of cross picking and I can burn it up.
One more point. I use this picking style on Merles intro to "Bottle Let Me Down"
as needed, also "Silver Threads" where it applies.
Try it, let me know what you think. Remember, start slow.
