Hello all! I got into steel a couple years back, and ended up selling my rig because I felt discouraged with my progress. I’ve missed and regretted it ever since, so happy to say today is delivery day for my new steel! A BMI early serial #004 from Mike at Steel Guitars of Ohio. 3 pedals, 2 knees. The 2 knees will be plenty for me for a long while. Just unboxed and set it up, and it sounds lovely.

Question for you all: I’m used to LKL and LKR raising and lowering E’s. LKL on this raises 8 a 1/2 and lowers 2 a 1/2. Is anybody familiar with this style change? And if I wanted to change to raising E’s would it be difficult?

Looking forward to joining the community again! Will post pictures in a sec.

Changing LKL so that it raises the E's would be simple.

The biggest caution is to be sure that the pedal rods do not interfere with or rub the rods of LKR or the C pedal. If it means changing the position of a puller or bending a rod, so be it. My slightly later model BMI is fairly sensitive to added friction and does not like a poorly routed rod one bit.

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep an eye out for that.

I second this. When I took on a BMI 12 string rebuild about 3 years ago it was very touchy about the angle the rods came into the changer Winking

Love my BMI.
Had to do a lot of rework when I first got it but thanks to the forum it went well.
Changing the knees should not be a major problem just take it slow and easy to assure proper alignments.

Owned a BMI for years. Loved it. Easy to work on. You could add more knees down the road.

Well the good news is that the LKL already raises the 8 string E. Now I just need to change it to raise the 4 string E instead of lower the 2nd string. I've never done this before, but it looks like I would have to move this metal piece to the 4th string slot, and rod it in the same spot as the 8th string one. Then I would have to move the rod at the nut/pickup end to the 2nd raise slot for the 4th string. Any tips/videos/advice on how to do so without damaging anything?
