I was recently re-watching this Doug Jernigan video someone posted last year and I was inspired to give this song a shot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GY3ptUrneOw
He starts talking about the E13 tuning at about 21:00 and gives some very useful information on playing this tune. When I heard him play the #11 chord I knew I had to give it a try. I am still trying to figure out how to learn songs on steel guitar, but I started with a chord chart in Eb which is the key Noel Boggs plays it in (and Jernigan). I learned the basic chord melody on regular guitar and now I am trying to translate that to steel guitar. This song seems to be opening up some doors that have been stubbornly shut in my playing. The melody is so deceptively simple, yet it opens harmonic possibilities that I am only beginning to comprehend! This song also seems to be somewhat of a test piece for steel and I found a bunch of great versions on YouTube. Hard to pick a favorite...

Thanks for bringing this one up Tim!
I have been playing an ending lick on a song that reminded me of the melody of another that I couldn't quite place. Turns out it was Tenderly.
Spent some time this afternoon arranging it for the Leavitt tuning.

I use it as the middle 6 strings on an 8-string with an F on the top, and a re-entrant Eb on the bottom. I didn't use either in the first 16 bars, but brought them in a bit in the last 16.
I used just the bass and drums from iRealPro played into the room, and recorded it with my cellphone on top of my amp. The camera is too close so switches focus between my hands, and the mic picks up some extra bar noise, but it'll give you an idea.
I'll keep working on it...

I‘ve just done some searching on Ray Noren here but not come up with the tuning. Could you please spell it out for me?

Thank you! Great playing everyone, I love to hear the same song played by different people, different interpretations... It is why I love music. I think this is a keeper. Maybe one day I will post something. I am a long ways from that! I jumped in the deep end of the pool on this one. I see you have Junior Barnard pedal there. I have been wanting one of those or possibly the JJ-150.
Of course I just went down the Ray Noren rabbit hole too. Cody lists the tuning in this other wonderful video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKxRvPOAXf4 That quite the interesting tuning. I can see how it would work great for slow jazz tunes. |
