It's been so long since I've had one of the original L-705s it's really hard to make a comparison.
I have 2 BL's in a Carter I'm playing. The front is a XR-16. I really like it. It's a little heavier sound than the BL710 that lives in the C6 slot.
I can say the XR16 is my favorite humbucker of those I've had, FWIW.
There are the new Telonics and Scott Swarz pickups where I don't have any experience, so can't compare to them. |

I have one on the E9 neck of my Carter. It is my favorite pickup. I replaced a BL710 with it. I also mounted a switch under my guitar that switches it from humbucker to single coil. I'm thinking of putting one on my C6 neck too. Love it. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I have a Telonics x-12 in my 1975 lacquer finished MSA. I have a BL-712 in my 1976 lacquer finished MSA. Identical built guitars. The x-12 vs 712 are the same in tone. However, I give the advantage to the x-12 because it has the double row adjustable pole pieces which allows you to tweak the volume and tone of each string (fine tune the pickup). The highs on the 712 are a little harsh to my ear and I have to tilt the pickup extremely downward on the high end of the neck to get rid of the harsh treble overtones, but I lose the volume on the highs. So, the x-12 or x-10 would be my preference. The cost of the x-10 or 12 is double that of the 710 or 712, but well worth it. Last I heard, JD was in love with the x-10. _________________ 1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Revelation preamp, Carbon Copy Delay and Hall Of Fame Reverb, Crown XLS 1002, 2- 15" Eminence Wheelhouse speakers, ShoBud Pedal, Effects Pedals. 1949 Epiphone D-8. |

If your pickup has a black, white and red wires like mine, you connect the black and white as normal. The red wire is the coil tap. That wire would go to one side of a SPST switch. A wire from the other side of the switch will go to the ground lug on the phone jack. I have heard that some also have green wire that neither of the two I bought had. Check with Becky if you have both.
This is a prewired switch I got from Amazon. The red wired is hooked to the red pickup wire and the black wire goes to ground of the jack.

Hey thanks guys. I'm waiting on the LxR-16 pickup and will install it when it arrives and will post on the results. I always wait until I change strings on a keyless guitar to change a pickup. _________________ I survived the sixties! |

I'm considering changing out the 710 on my C6 neck to an XR-16 and wiring in the switch. When I use the XR-16 in single coil mode on E9, the volume drops below the volume of the humbucker volume on my C6 neck 710. I might consider increasing the space between the 710 and the strings to see if that will balance better. A minor inconvenience, but...
Installing the XR-16 and the 710 is a major operation on my Carter. The baseplate is too long for the pickup cavity and required me to use a Dremel to shave it off the ends to fit. My guitar originally came with George L pickups which are shorter in length, I guess. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I just installed the Wilde Lxr-16 12 string pickup in my Sierra U-12. I must say this pickup has a nice vibe and well balanced. It also has a coil split feature and If I can figure out where I can put a mini switch with a wire to ground it will be another useful tone to use. I already hooked up an alligator clip to ground to try it out. _________________ I survived the sixties! |

I had to mount my switch underneath the guitar. I would have liked to put it next to my neck selector switch, but on the Carter, that switch is mounted in the side of the E9 neck. And, the screws that mount the neck are under cross shafts, so I would hav had to remove some cross shafts to access the screws to remove the neck. Not worth it to me. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) .
