I read in a post recently that standoffs can be used for tuning nuts and much cheaper to buy. I can't find any un-threaded standoffs. Question: if purchasing threaded standoffs, which size? I see M3, which are probably too large (1/8" inside diameter). M2.5 maybe? I'm thinking M2 (1/16" ID). Even though these are threaded, the M2 could be drilled out and would produce an un-threaded or nearly un-threaded tuning nut. Does anyone on the Forum have experience using these for tuning nuts?

I had trouble finding some as well but I think these may work. https://www.zoro.com/hex-spacers/c/7142/
Check The 1st two listed. You want 3/16 hex and measure your rods to get the inside diameter. They only make them 3/4 length max so you also have to use spacers for most instruments.I did get some nice spacers from this site super cheap.I haven’t tried the nuts but they look good and closest I could find..

.115 would put the inside diameter at 1/8". Inside would be too large to cut threads. If they had metric M2 (1/16) or M2.5 (3/32 for 1/8 rod) would work. M2 would have to be drilled out.

I have a mixed bag of tuners on both of my U-12 MSA's. I thought I'd clean it all up with new matching tuning nuts on both guitars and all the same length. Some currently tune with tightness and others too loose. Not worth the price of continuity if they cost $1.30 - $1.50 each.

Check the outside size of those metric hole size ones, They may be 5mm on the outside. I think that is why some people are looking for 5mm tuning wrenches.
3/16" is .187, 5mm is .196. Would be hard to see The .009 difference with naked eye.

Players use a 5mm hex driver because the 3/16” size nylon nut expands slightly when you screw it on the rod. This makes for an (unnecessary) tight fit in the 3/16” hex driver.

Michael Yahl (PSG Parts) sells the ones you need, 10 for $10.
(For the old MSA guitars, you want the #5 nuts.)

Fastener Superstore sells 3/16 hex by .091 ID X 1/2 inch long unthreaded for $.09 each. 1/8" rod is .125 OD. However.... you have buy in bulk of 1000. Laughing

Each of my U-12 guitars has 26 pulls, actually 24 nuts at the end plate because I tune the A pedal from under the guitar with homemade nylon tuners. The changers are 2 up and 2 down and need two triple pulls for U-12. Each of two rods are pulling two pulls. So, I'd need 48 new tuning nuts to re-nut both guitars. Some rods are threaded #40, some are #32. I don't remember what the original MSA rod thread size?

At PSG Parts would cost $48.00 plus shipping. Not bad. At Fastener Superstore bulk of 1000 would cost $86.00 plus shipping. If everyone on the Forum wanted some, I could sell the rest off at $.10 each and move the rest of them. Laughing
