Hello y'all. I'm happy to find a community of steel players.
Anywho, I'm was learning from the C6th Lap Steel book Learn to Play C6 Lap Steel by joedocmusic, when I reached a section about bending the Eb note on the third fret(finger?) marker on the C minor chord to change it to a C major chord. I had trouble bending as the tension is pretty high with the tunning, and there was barely any change in the pitch. Is there any soultion for making bends easier to play for chords? Thank you in advance. |

Three remedies:
1) Reduce string tension (tune to a lower pitch)
2) Install a lighter gauge string (preferred method)
3) Pull harder |

You can use 2 fingers to pull....it'll take practice.....
You can plant your thumb against the side of the neck as an anchor to give you more pulling power.....
Pull with 2 fingers while anchoring your thumb against the neck....
Try not to pull down when chording.....the string won't make contact with the bar.....try to pull the bending string upward to avoid non contact....
If none of these work,.....start looking at pedal steels..... ![Laughing](images/smiles/icon_lol.gif) |

I would recommend purchasing lap steel strings individually by the gauge instead of by the packaged set. I get mine from JustStrings.com.
There is lots of helpful information in this post, and links to more. Mr. Mudgett has most eloquently explained his approach in his post (scroll down a tad for Dave's comments):

Most likely you'll need to experiment a little bit (and sacrifice a few strings) before you discover what works best for you on any particular instrument. Very few lap steels react exactly the same way to the same string gauges.
Good luck! |

It's a challenge to bend on the lower frets. I use two fingers down there. Once you get past to the 5th fret it becomes much easier. IMO I wouldn't go to a lighter gauge. It will throw off the tension balance with the other strings and could introduce a new issue with bar buzz. |

Dobro players often call that a "cheese slicer" bend on the 1st or 2nd string. Can be physically difficult. _________________ GFI Expo S-10PE, Sho-Bud 6139, Fender 2x8 Stringmaster, Supro consoles, Dobro. And more. |
