I'm looking for a resonator to play with my bluegrass band. I play guitar in it, and pedal steel in a country band. Sometimes the singer plays guitar instead of Mando...
I played a Gold Tone Beard a while back and thought it was a little quiet. I think it was because it was Mahogany. I also played a Beard Vintage R and loved it but couldn't invest that amount. I really can't spend north of maybe $700 without trading/selling my banjo. I know I won't play it full time in a band again. But, I did for years, and like the idea of having it around for occasional recordings. Though, I don't find banjo easy to just pick up cold and play.
Last night I played a Tut Taylor Virginian and really liked the tone. It was warm, clear, and had a sweet vocal to it. It seems like a nice resonator, but is $1400. So, I'd probably need to trade/sell the banjo. The banjo is a Sullivan Bardstown if that matters.
About an hour from me is a Recording King RR-60-VS for about $550 new. I've seen others say that those recording kings sound like the Virginian. And, I know you can upgrade the cone.
I should note that I've also played other dobro (multiple Dobro brands, and a Peal River). The Pearl River was nice, but none of them spoke to me in the same way. Pearl River was also out of range. Before I drive over an hour for the Recording King, I'm wondering if others have experience with the both the Recording King and Tut Taylor, and could lend me some of their knowledge.
Obviously, waiting is also and option, just less fun.

The Tut Taylor Virginian is American made, and maple. The Recording King is Asian made, and mahogany. They should sound very different from each other.
I have the Crafters of Tennessee TN-01 and it's a fine guitar. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Like Brad said. I have a Recording King lap steel and I had a Virginian. The RK works but is really low quality. The Virginian is a pro grade instrument. Like comparing Ball Park Franks and Fun Dogs in my mind. I bought the RK for a project. Put a horeshoe PU from a 39 Rick model 59 in it. Happy Trails |

The Tut Taylor is best but Gold Tone is good quality and the RK I rate as just OK.
Dont sell that banjo! Wait a little save up and get the GT. It’s the the most economical choice. _________________ KEVIN MAUL: Airline, Beard, Clinesmith, Donner, Evans, Excel, Fender, Fluger, GFI, Gibson, Hilton, Ibanez, Justice, K+K, Live Strings, MOYO, National, Oahu, Peterson, Quilter, Rickenbacher, Sho~Bud, Supro, TC, Ultimate, VHT, Williams, X-otic, Yamaha, ZKing. |
