Thanks for tabbing out an example Dick. (Now it belongs on the tablature page! Wasn't sure where to put it.)
I think the important thing to learn for beginners is that the root is the fret you start on.
As example to tab a G scale start on the open third fret and use an appropriate pattern.
(the middle pattern)
For a beginner like me it was an epiphany.
