This is my first post, and while I'm a good electric guitar player I have no experience with pedal steels. Need some advice on what I have and what it may be worth as these were bought to sell. ( My next post will be about an Emmons dual neck pedal steel that is actually (I think) complete! I may keep that one if I can figure it out...).
So, the big thing about both these instruments is that they came to me without the legs and pedals (!).
This is a real shame for the D-1000 because it is in fantastic condition with original blonde case. There would be a separate (blonde) case that is missing that has all the legs and pedals. This was an estate sale, so I'm thinking that is gone. But what do you folks advise on doing with this beautiful though incomplete thing? Wait around and try to find the correct leg/pedal assembly (10 pedals and a sunburst cross bar to attach them to? ...I think that is a looong shot. Or are that people who craft replacements? Would someone buy it as a lap steel? I'm thinking I sell it as-is and see if it is a magic find for someone. If I put it up for sale, what's a good price?
Next is the Wheeler. This one is well used. Fairly good shape it seems, but I don't know anything. single neck and 10 strings. Again, no legs or pedals, though it does have 2 knee levers. I read some about these and they have a cool back story and it seems a select group of people dig them. But, same questions as above, what to do with it now? Anyone have Ped-all pedals?? There should be three. Are rods a more standard interchangeable thing, or are they different for every brand? If I could get this one functional it might be a better beginner instrument for me than the full Emmons) and I wouldn't really care if the parts matched as long as they function. Again, I'm thinking I sell it as-is and see if it is a magic find for someone. If I put it up for sale, what's a good price? Or what would it cost to make it functional with pedals?

No Legs and No Pedals is a big deal ! Whoever buys either guitar won't be able to play them until that issue is fixed. So comparing prices with guitars that are complete with legs and pedals wont be so straight forward. Otherwise the Fender looks very attractive, the Wheeler not so much. If you want to learn to play yourself, that Emmons you posted elsewhere looks great! For a first guitar you normally want a minimum of 10 strings and 3 pedals and 4 knee levers .... and for everything to be in good working order. The Fender does not have the capabilities of a modern guitar, but that one is in good shape and certain people would like it for certain reasons, even though it only has 8 strings and not 10. If you can get a hold of decent legs and pedals you could play it yourself a while before selling it, they are fun, but they can only take you so far. If I were in your position, I would dump the Wheeler, I would learn to play on the Emmons, and I would save the Fender to fool around with years from now after I had learned how to play on a regular 10 string guitar. However if you do want to sell the Fender, there is a certain market for it, but more difficult to sell without the legs - that's for sure; Other folks are completely different than I am, and they might have fun restoring the Wheeler. I don't know anything about that one, except you probably don't want to learn on a guitar that needs a complete overhaul, you want to learn on a guitar that works right out of the box. The Emmons is not too complicated to learn on, that's a great guitar. _________________ Derby SD-10 5x6; GFI S-10 5x5; GFI S-10 5x5; Zum D-10 8x7; Zum D-10 9x9; Fender 400; Fender Rumble 200; Nashville 400; Telonics TCA-500. |
