I picked up a Mad Professor Forest Green Compressor and love it. Mainly because it has a "sustain" setting that gives miles of sustain but does not squash the attack in any noticeable way. love it!! _________________ Bryce

i've been experimenting with compressor pedals a bit lately. i have a marshall 'edward the compressor' ed-1, a wampler ego and a 4 knob keeley rigged up right now. i have to say that my favourite is the marshal. it's very transparent and gives just the right amount of compressor 'feel' without a lot of and quack or squash. i was surprised that the keeley was not very transparent at all. |

I used a Boss CS-3 on my six string rig for years and liked quite a bit. Having said that, I have a friend of mine who uses a Barber Tone Press with his six string guitar rig and it is by far the best sounding compressor I have ever heard. I have never used a compressor on steel or pedal steel and I quit using them on guitar when I started playing through nothing but tube amps, but I keep my Boss around for the few times that I play through my old Peavey Special 150 because it gives the solid state amp more of a tube like feel and sound to it. My friend uses his Barber Tone Press with his tube Mesa Boogie rig and his Fishman acoustic amp rig and it sounds great in both situations. He's using a Strat that has a special p/u on it that is a piezo made for electric guitars. He can make it sound like an acoustic or an electric with either amp rig! He says that the Barber Tone Press is the key to the tone he's getting. |

For lap steel I love my Xotic SP pedal combined with an Earth Drive. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

Another vote for the Xotic....I've used Keeleys for a long time, and they are great, but the Xotic is a mini pedal - my board now has twice the pedals in half the space thanks to those - and it has a LOT of adjustments - attack, etc. is inside on DIP switches...you pretty much set those once and then vary the rest with the outside controls.
I thought I wouldn't like just having a 3-position switch for amount of compression, but it is quite nice to just flip it now and then and go back easily to a previous setting...
I loved my Earth Drive also, but have switched to a One Control Golden Acorn, looking for the Ben Harper violin-like sustain Dumble tone rather than the Earth Drive more classic tone.... Used a ZenDrive for a while, really nice, the Acorn is pretty much the same tone but in a mini-pedal. _________________ https://www.lostsailorspdx.com
