Mark, try a Lawrence 912 pickup, it's a stacked humbucker, it looks like a single coil, but it isn't and is dead quiet. I use it for my Mullen extended E9 neck and like it a lot. Mine was a gift from my pal Mike Johnstone years ago. It doesn't have the "sparkly edge" of a single coil, but all strings have about equal volume, and no noise.
