I am looking for a screw that goes in my National Double Console c1961 Lap Steel (6 string) I am told the screw I am looking for is a #3, 1 inch screw. It has threads up to about 1/4 inch to the top. the top of the screw is Philips and is not flat but rather curved. The screw goes to one of the chrome pickups, the type of the pickups I do not know. I have tried everywhere but this screw seems to be rare.
. I found a slotted, flathead version but would really like to get it back to the original screw. The cover is secure w 3 other screws, just trying to get it all back to original Also missing both black Bridge guards, but those may be a lost cause. Thanks

Not sure, but I think that screw is called an oval head? I looked in Mcmaster Carr and they don't have any that go that small, that I could find. I have modified regular flat head screws so they had that domed top. After done and polished it looked the same as chrome. Unless you live in an extremely humid place or have acid in your system, with a high polish on the screw head it will not rust.

Yeah.... #3 + 1" + oval head + phillips .... that's a tough find. I spent enough time searching and getting skunked to conclude....good luck!

Can't help with the screw but for the covers you might find someone to 3D print some, either buy another guitar or borrow one for a sample. Those covers are always missing and imo the guitars usually play better without them.

Nancy, if you haven't found a screw yet, I may have a couple. I sent you a pm. Now having trouble trying to take a photo to post. Can seem to get my camera in focus on the screw. A little later today, I'll try and use my wife's smart phone camera.

A #3 screw is the head size, that is the size of screws used on guitar tuners, very small. The one you need should be a #6x1"oval-head . Also important on vintage steels they use nickel plated screws. Hardware stores have not carried nickel plated screws for decades...so don't look there.

If it is a #6 x 1, Philadelphia Luthier Supply has these in nickel https://www.philadelphialuthiertools.com/screws-nuts/6-x-1-25-4mm-phillips-head-bridge-screw-set-of-5/. Other luthier supply houses should also carry them.

If you can’t match the other screws, change them all to something similar. But keep the originals in the case.
You could possibly match them at a later date after a long search.

If it is a #6x1" (which I would bet it is). That is also the same screw that Fender used on their strap buttons and the screws to mount the Tele and other bridges late 50s and most of the 1960s.

Here is the screw that I have. But measuring it from the very tip to the top of the oval, I get 1.19 inches with my micrometer. So it may be too long. But I do know these are from an old National steel/amp combo that my dad had years ago.
Let me know Nancy, if you think it would work. I actually have 4 of them, I can send you free of charge.

Ovalhead in USA. Countersunk raised-head in Britain and dominions.

There are three solutions I have relied upon in the past for vintage guitar screws.

You are looking for a nickel-plated screw -- not chrome. Not stainless.

The best solution is to go to a real hardware store -- not an ACE or Walmart or Home Depot. Go to the old hardware store in your area that has old screws in stock. You can still find old screws in the old boxes for $1.95 for a hundred. You can also find old screws at home restoration shops -- again, not Home Depot. The shops that have parts and fixtures for old houses.

The next best is go to a cabinet repair shop. They may have some in the coffee can where they keep old random screws and parts.

The third solution is to go to McMaster carr and order the brass oval headed wood screws in your size and plate the screw or have the screw plated. A shop that plates silver could do it, as they usually plate nickel as well, or a hot rod/motorcycle shop could do it. Or you could. It is easy. I have plated a lot of screws to replace missing screws for Bigsbys and Wrights where i could not find the originals.

Also, I have used P90 pickup screws in a pinch when I needed a thin long screw. Get 4 so you can swap them all out while looking for the correct screw. I promise that the front row customers will not notice the replacement screws Smile

I bought a bunch of screws from the Fender Hardware Guy (?) at Dallas Guitar Show... he has a huge booth with big bags of all that stuff.

You can also buy strap buttons/screws from Guitar Center, Fender brand.
