I know that Herb Remington used A6 a lot. The videos I can find of him are from his later life and he is playing his D8 steel guitar. I assume his inner neck is tuned A6 (most likely I am wrong  ).
What tuning did he use on his 2nd neck (outer)?

| On his lap steel instruction video he has A6 on the inside neck and E7 on the outside neck and he suggests an E7 or E13. |

My guess is it is an E13th tuning.
The E13 chord contains (L2H) the: E - G# - B - D - F# - A - C# notes.
Which is: R - 3rd - 5th - 7th - 9th - 11th - 13th

Lynn Oliver lists Herb's E13 tuning as:
(L2H) E - G# - D - F# - G# - B# - C# - E
B#? B# would imply that it's an E augmented 13 chord or E13#5 which I doubt Herb used as his E tuning.
I think it is just a typo as Cindy Cashdollar uses:
(L2H) E - G# - D - F# - G# - B - C# - E (note: no 11th (A) note).
Cindy was a student of Herb so I'm guessing that Herb's E13 is the same as Cindy's:
(L2H) E - G# - D - F# - G# - B - C# - E
Which is logically: R 3rd 7th 9th 3rd 5th 13th R

It’s almost certainly (H2L) E C# G# F# D B G# E, which is the Leon McAulliffe E13th tuning. As far as having an A string in an E13th tuning, John Ely’s (H2L) E C# B A G# F# F D has many amazing sounds in there, I keep it on my closest neck. You sacrifice the strums and low end of the straight E13th tunings, but in return get so many lush chord possibilities.
When Herb played triple necks he had F#13 (H2L) E C# G# E A# F# d# f# on the back neck (reentrant f# and d#, pitched above high E and C# respectively). I love this tuning and I think it’s a shame he stopped using it later on but I guess it was not worth the weight to keep using a triple.
Joaquin Murphey also used an F# tuning (as heard on Oklahoma Stomp with Spade Cooley), as E C# G# E A# a# (only 6 strings). I remember an old forum post saying Herb Remington got his F# tuning from a mediocre player in a bar who was using E C# G# E A # a# d# f#, so three re-entrant strings on the bottom!
I really like these F# tunings, and experimented with them a lot. Currently using (H2L) E D# C# A# G# F# E A#. for comparison, if it was an E13th, it would be spelled: D C# B G# F# E D G#. |
