Is there a way I can play through headphones-only on the 202?
I can get a signal to my 'phones but the amp is still driving the speaker. I need to find a way to fill the (more than) occasional sleepless night.

• SIG OUT and PRE/POST switch:
In PRE position, SIG OUT sends a balanced, TRS line-out that is not affected by the MASTER setting, making this a good “house feed” that is independent of stage volume.
In POST position, it sends a mono headphone signal controlled by the MASTER, to obtain a comfortable listening level.
In both cases, the signal is flat with the Input switch on the FRFR position, and has cabinet simulation (cab-sim) on FULLQ and VINT positions, which is independent of any speaker connection.
Pro Tip: In the PRE position, the Master may be turned all the way off to silence the speaker without affecting the SIG OUT level. Unplug the speaker to use headphones silently in the POST position. |

Aha! Jon to the rescue!
Thanks, Jon: I would never have thought of even trying to turn down the master volume and would assume it would turn it down in my ears, too.
I'll go and try it. |

Jon
That works in theory but, for all practical purposes, it's not usable. The signal to the headphones is weak and distorted, the last thing we want on our instrument.
I should poke around a bit more and see if I can improve it, but no luck so far. |

Unplug the speaker. It works OK (won't hurt) without speaker attached. |

Thanks, Jack.
I always thought that running an amp without it being connected to a speaker was harmful. I guess that's old technology nowadays.
I will try it. |

That's totally valid but it pertains specifically to tube amps. And btw, my post, above, was from the manual. I don't think I've ever tried head phones with any of my Quilters so I've got no experience to draw from. |

Well, that works.
I had to check, though, when plugging the speaker back in: I was reaching under to unplug it and failed to notice the two inputs! One's for 4 0hms, the other for 8.
Checking the cone, it says mine's an 8 ohm so I trust that's correct.
Thanks to both Jon and to Jack: Jon - going to an online manual didn't occur to me. Good idea!
The old notion of never running an amp with it having a speaker to drive is firmly embedded in my ancient brain. Time to tidy the attic! |
