Bill Hatcher built a lap steel bass, he says he used jazz bass style pickups. Whether it sounds "right" is in the ear of the beholder, Bill's bass sounds great to me. John Paul Jones (Led ex-Zeppelin) plays a bass lap steel made by Hugh Manson. He puts it to very good use. Maybe this will give you some ideas.
