I believe I move both knuckles when I pick.
I struggle with my right hand approach a bit myself. What goofs me up is my Dobro playing. The string spacing is so much wider on my Dobro and the tone benefits from a hard attack.
Lately, I'm rediscovering pick blocking and now it seems I go between palm and pick blocking on the PSG. I palm block a three string grip but pick block individual strings I find.
I'd go with whatever works for you. Indeed, you'll find a myriad of answers on this one. |

I've been playing fingerstyle without picks for 25 years or so. For me it's much more important to focus on the health aspect than anything else. I keep my wrist straight and keep the palm of my hand from moving, but otherwise all joints move to pick. This is about the strongest and most stable position that still allows all the actions necessary. I hope to be able to keep this up until the day I die, Lord willing. |
