i'm getting ready to install 2 knee levers on my pro II.

most of the pictures i see of the RKR cross shaft have it placed where i have mine in the picture, but seem to avoid the two screws already there (i assume that they hold the neck on). obviously mine interfere with the install.

is it common to move the neck mounting screws, or is there a solution that i'm missing?

Assuming you want to Lower strings 2&9 on that lever, you could put the shaft hanger brackets more towards the middle of the shaft. This would allow you to have your bell cranks on the outside of the brackets some everything fits good. If you’re going to drill holes in the cabinet. Make sure to mark your drill bit with a shaft collar for depth. You wouldn’t want to drill through that poor guitar. Check for proper screw length too.

Dave, you must have a later model Pro II Custom. My '73 Pro II is shown below, and it doesn't have screws in that position. It does have one screw per neck towards the key head end.

The picture below is my '81 Pro I. It's more like your guitar. Maybe this could help?

thanks, guys. i never thought of mounting the puller outboard of the brackets. i haven't seen that done.

kenny, it's interesting that there are no screws for the neck on your guitar there. my pro II was built the year after yours maybe. it's still round front, barrel tuning and aluminum fingers, but it is finished clear underneath with no green or white paint/ flocking.

i removed those neck screws from the c6 neck just to see what would happen. nothing happened. i think moving them would be fine.

i bought this guitar a few months back because i've always wanted one. i thought adding levers would a piece of cake, but scraping together and getting some parts made has been a real drag. trying to line things up based on pictures off of the internet is a pain, too. i'm a thousand miles from any steel mechanics. i haven't even played this thing yet!

Yes, there's no magic to their specific placement, they just need to hold the neck tight, moving them 1/2"-3/4" away is no problem. You'll just have a couple of stray screw holes which, if you position the new brackets thoughtfully, will not be visible. The reason Kenny's guitar doesn't have those screws is most likely because they are on the top of the neck, exposed to the world as was typical on the earlier Professional/Pro series guitars. Sho-Bud changed that around '73, strictly for aesthetics as far as I know.

Another option is to relocate the raise helper bracket 1/4"-3/8" closer to the changer. On the later '70s Buds they did this, and bent the tab where the springs attach out 15-20 degrees to compensate, or you could just snip a couple of turns off the springs to maintain the same tension.

Correct Ian, I have a couple of extra screws on top in the wood on both necks. My guitar was built in November of '73, so the change was after then. My '74 Pro I has screws on the bottom like Dave's.
