I'm about to be moving out of the country for the better part of a year and wanted to bring my steel. It's a single neck GFI student. Right now I just have a wooden case that feels fairly sturdy but I'm not sure it can stand up to the beating it might get with the airline as a checked item. Does anyone have any advice for flying with it. I know flight cases are great but I'm short on time for getting a fitted single neck flight case. I've also seen a few of the other threads on this but they were pretty old and some updated advice would be awesome. |

Depending on how big your case is you might be better off bringing it as your carry on. If it will fit in the overhead or the coat closet there shouldn't be any issues. Disclaimer: I've never flown with a pedal steel but I bring my acoustic guitar on delta flights a couple times a month and I've never had to check it |

Was going to say something similar, see if you can find a small keyboard case that fits the body, carry that on, put the legs in your checked bag. |

I’ve used padded rifle bags as carry on with good luck. The problem may be severe baggage restrictions on International flights. Do the best you can to check on that beforehand but know that you are subject to whims of the crew when actually boarding a flight. _________________ KEVIN MAUL: Airline, Beard, Clinesmith, Danelectro, Evans, Fender, GFI, Gibson, Hilton, Ibanez, Justice, K+K, Live Strings, MOYO, National, Oahu, Peterson, Quilter, Rickenbacher, Sho~Bud, Supro, TC, Ultimate, VHT, Williams, X-otic, Yamaha, ZKing. |

I got a very compact Excel S12 keyless 24" scale I use for trips.
I travel abroad for several weeks, sometimes months and wanted to have a PSG to carry a long with a BOSS Waza Head Phone amp.
The guitar came with a very light suite-case material like case.
I had a padded nylon canvas carry-on case made, just for the body.
I must say, long distance, I travel Business Class, and I have always been able to bring acoustic standard guitars. The shorty Excel is much smaller than a standard guitar, and while I have to open it and explain it several times, and demonstrate that it indeed is a "musical" instrument buy lifting and turning her over and strum the strings, I've never had a refusal. And I would feel confident to bring it on Coach.
The legs and rack go in my normal suitcase, wrapped with undershirts and other things I rather not describe here
I have an S12 MSA SuperSlide, for that one I got a nylon canvas RIFLE bag... being from a recognizable rifle manufacturer who could not resist the urge to splatter the name all across the darn thing... it's always a "conversation piece" with TSA, but with a good humor routine, I've been always successful to get some laughter, smiles and THRU.
Again, the legs travel in my suite-case.

Did you consider boxing it up with padding and outer carton, and shipping it to your final destination? _________________ GFI Expo S-10PE, Sho-Bud 6139, Fender 2x8 Stringmaster, Supro consoles, Dobro. And more. |

That's what I would do, if it were a once-off show. Not practical for an extended tour |
That’s what I have done even on extended tours. I was the dummy protecting my cardboard box all across the UK.
Brace the pedalboard section , make sure nothing is loose and put it in a cardboard box with some padding in the corners. Works fine. _________________ Bob |
