The diagrams I have found show only two wires coming from these pickups. This one is out of a 39 model B and has three. Are the two joined together or what goes on here?

Simply use your multimeter and check the DC resistance between leads. This is pickups 101 work.

It's very simple. If you are unsure how to use your multimeter ( You DO have one if you're wiring guitars, right?} take the meter, pickup and a notepad to the nearest professional guitar tech shop - they can show you how to do it in about 5 minutes. Not the guy in the little area at Guitar Center or another guitar store - find a REAL guitar and amp tech shop.

But expect to pay a $25-40 minimum bench charge - this is stuff they get paid to do.

Some will do it for nothing. If so, give him at least $10. And go buy a book about basic electronics and another about wiring guitar pickups. I hate having to tell people who don't know what they are doing that they've destroyed a pickup by pulling on internally connected wires!

The two that are coming out of the hole in the mounting plate are both "Hot" ...

The two that are soldered to the screw/mounting plate are "Grounds"

One set (hot & ground ) go straight to the 1/4" jack ...

The other set goes to the volume pot ...

This sets up a variable load on the coil ... so as you roll off the volume ... the tone becomes more bassy ...

This was initially for "volume only" Rickys ... this scheme was carried over when they added a tone ..,
