For sale a rare and beautiful Dobro M14 Leader from the mid-1930's. It is a roundneck with a fiddle-edge brass body with nickel plating. This was the top end model of the spider-cone metal body Dobros, competing with National and their biscuit cone resonators. The back and sides were joined with a rolled edge - the "fiddle edge" of the common name - unique to this era of Dobros. These were probably made in the Regal factory for Dobro.
This is the cleanest body I have ever seen on one of these, with crisp engraving, nice plating and no major dents. The neck needs some work, however. There was a headstock break that looks to have been repaired well long ago. The neck itself is quite thick, with a pronounced V shape, typical of the era. It plays well on the first seven frets or so, above that there is buzzing because the action is too low and the neck has a hump as it joins the body. To play well up and down the neck, I would have fingerboard planed and refretted. It plays well with a bottleneck as-is.
It sounds great, with more sustain than the typical single-cone Nationals.
Comes with a newer hard case that fits it very well.
$1750 net to me, plus shipping. Not interested in trades, as I'm moving to a smaller place and am trying to reduce the instrument count.
