From what I can tell poking around on line, the answer is "yes," but thought I should get some confirmation from someone who actually knows. I just picked up a Bandit 65 because it was very local and dirt cheap (and caked in dirt for that matter). Sounds great for tele with the Scorpion speaker (haven't tried it for steel). I would like to try a couple of neo speakers I have lying around to slightly lighten the amp. One is an 8 ohm, one is a 4 ohm. Can it run safely with the 4 ohm speaker? The manual gives ratings at 4 ohms, so I should think it would be safe, but I am pretty clueless about such things.

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment.

The short answer is "yes", as long as you do not push the amp too hard. Loud playing, especially with any crunch or distortion, should be limited. For your steel work, it will do fine (as steel players seldom play loud and distorted, like 90% of lead players usually do).

The amp is rated lower when running at 4 ohms, and will put out only about 40-50 watts.

Thanks, Donny. Well, since I'm more likely to use this with a Tele, I should probably stick with an 8 ohm speaker.

Yes, it's lower-rated at 4 Ohms, and the transistors will run hotter since they're drawing more current at the lower impedance at a given power level. But the manual states that it is safe to run it at 4 Ohms, but not 2 Ohms -
Quote:
Power at Clipping
(5% THD, 1 KHz, 120VAC line)
Typically:
40 W RMS at 16 Ohms
70 W RMS at 8 Ohms
50 W RMS at 4 Ohms
2 Ohms not recommended

I really like these amps for clean Tele, and I think the Scorpions that were stock in these is a part of that. But I didn't like the Scorps for pedal steel. The very high-midrange bump that the Tele loved, the steel didn't. If you have some speakers around, I'd try a clean 8 Ohm speaker. I had an 8 Ohm Eminence speaker similar to a Blue Marvel lying around, and found it really good for steel in mine, and fine for Tele too. But the Tele lost just a bit of that Tele honk.

My Bandit 65 disappeared. I was leaving it at various rehearsal spaces and one day it just wasn't there. I was sorta surprise because most musicians I know around here go, "Peavey? Nah." Even now, I still see these types of Peaveys dirt cheap, although some people have caught on to the mid-size amps series like the Bandit, Special, Studio Pro, Backstage, and so on.

BTW, the manual is here - https://assets.peavey.com/literature/manuals/80300095.pdf
