Hi! Just wondering what you use for a preamp? Does someone make an octal one? I use an Alembic that's more like the front end of a 60's Fender, but would love to find something with a 6SN7 or something like that... |

A couple of options that I know of (and own one of each). Brad Sarno's V8 preamp is very nice. A pair of 6SL7's.
Frenzel also makes an octal preamp that has a Fender like channel as well as a Marshall like channel. I think the circuit in this one is closer to the Alembic. Also a pair of 6SL7s.
They're both very nice preamps.

I use a Sarno V8 octal pre. It’s all mastering grade stuff. Fantastic for steel or bass direct into a console too. With that amp of John’s it would be like heaven. _________________ Bob |

John:
That McIntosh amplifier is AudioFile quality. I thought
steel guitar players were picky about gear but the high end audio guys spend mega bucks on stereo components.
When this Covid stuff is over, I'm going to take a ride and visit you. Your about 120 miles as the crow flys.

My thoughts exactly. But 'ol Jerry and them used solid state Macs, the 2300 (300 watts a side ).
And Birch ply cabs made by Alembic now offered by Hard Trucker.
Did prod for CSN some years ago. Stills had an Alembic F series preamp in his rack.
The Mac tube series amps are classic!
Th MC240 is 40 watts a side. _________________ ShoBud The Pro 1

Thanks friends. Super quality collectable in great shape. Would love to connect with a regional buyer as the piece is heavy! (but exquisite!) _________________ Steel Guitar Services:

Sorry about partially hijacking the thread.
I vaguely remember reading somewhere that he used a pair of either 240’s or 275’s back in the day. What a sound!!! I don’t recall what he may have used to drive those beasts. Does anyone else have the same recollection?
These Macs are stellar and pairing it with a JBL Paragon or Metragon for a Stereo system is to die for. I wonder what a PSG would sound like on a rig like that. Good Luck on Moving it gig to gig. _________________ Pedal Steel Guitar is "Music from Heaven" |
