Evans all the way. Spent/wasted a lot of money trying other brands...should have bought an Evans to begin with! |

The Evans FET 500 LV Combo Amp is one of the best sounding steel guitar amplifiers I ever owned. I would choose it over many other brands and types of amps. _________________ ZumSteel SD10; CLR Custom SD10; Telonics 500-B w/ TT 15; Hilton Low Profile VP; Frenchy's Steel Mill Strings; George L's Cables; BJS Tone Bars; Hoffmeyer Picks. I bought one of the very early Nashville 400 amps, right after they first came out. What a great amp.
A few years later, Derrell built me an Evans FET-500 LV, large cabinet.
Shortly after that, the Peavey went into the closet.
The Peavey still sounded great; but, the Evans sounded better! _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande

Curious to know some explanation why (or how?) the Evans FET 500 sounds better than the Peavey models??
How would the Evans stack against an original Session 400 with the transitional JBL speaker that became the BW? |

I 've using an FET 500,since my Nashville 400 died on me. I borrowed it, from Billy Tam and it is the absolute compliment to my LeGrande II. |

In response to Tom Gorr... You have a valid question here regarding the FET 500 and early Session 400 with the PV-JBL. These are probably my two, favorite combo amps over the past 50 years.
In my opinion, they're fairly close but, I would give the edge to the Evans. In the late 70s, I had several early FET 500 Customs and several Session 400s (one which had the PV-JBL.) Particularly in live situations, the Evans shined as it had a distinct projection and note separation at all volume levels. I like those Session 400s better than any other PV steel amp and still have one. I also have an Evans FET 500LV. I also had two early Webbs back in the 70s which sounded great but failed so often I quickly got rid of them.
To me, I actually preferred the original high-volt FET 500 very slightly over the LV model... but not for recording. The original HV FET 500s had a bit of the "white noise, hiss" which some engineers disliked. So in those days I used the Session 400s when recording as they were quieter. The later FET 500 LV models eliminated the hiss while keeping the overall tonal qualities of the earlier models.
I had a few Nashville 400s and they sounded good and took a beating out on the road. That said, choosing between the Evans, FET 500 Custom and the Nashville 400... I prefer the Evans. Great Sounding Amps,,, and they handled the road just fine as well !!! |

Everything Tiny said, +1.
The early 70’s session 400 with the JBL made peavey speaker were great. The JBL added a special spark to the tone that the black widow failed to duplicate. The best sounding Nashville 400 was with the John Lemay mod. It made all other NV 400’s pale in comparison. I’ve used Evans FET 500’s far more than any other combo as I’m able to achieve the tone I prefer. The circuitry was designed to primarily emulate a tube tone and it does a respectable job of it. The evans eclipse speakers have a very unique response that’s rich in the low and mid frequencies while rolling off the ice pick highs evans are known for. But the best response was a large cabinet loaded with a JBL E-130. I’ve had 8 or 10 Darrell Stephens models (absolute best) and 3 SE-200 models, which are decent as well but lack the gusto of the FET models. 😎 |

Derrell Stephens was and is an electronics genius. He came up with the idea of the FET which stands for "Field Effect Transistor" to use in the Evans FET 500 LV which kind of simulates a tube sound....Now I'm not trying to start WWIII here I'm just stating what was done early on with these amps. And It has worked for me for many years...I started out with a Session 500 and for Brut power it was Great but, I now have back trouble because of it and a Hernia to show for it!....for Quality it is the Evans FET 500 LV ALL The way!!!
for what it's worth it's just My Humble Opinion! |

Hey Bobby Harris...
I remarked above that I had two Webbs. The first I got in early 1978 (maroon tolex) and the second in late 1978 (black). I really liked the way they sounded very much but like I said, they would not hold up out on the road and failed often. They didn't like riding in the belly of the bus I guess.
I would put the sound of those Webb 614E amps right up there close with my Evans FET 500 and the early PV Session 400. With the Webbs, I used the "hybrid" setting on the three position switch. I NEVER used the 5-band EQ to the right side on the control panel, the standard tone knobs did the job just fine.
More recently, I've learned that the toggle switch used to activate / bypass that 5-band EQ was usually the issue with the amps failing back in those days, even if you never touched the switch. I had to get rid of them fairly soon after getting them as I just couldn't trust them. When they quit it was always right in the middle of a show. It was a shame because they sounded great. I guess the later versions including the Tom Bradshaw Webbs had solved the switch issue.
In light of that, my Evans FET 500s sounded as good or better and they never let me down. Plus, Derrell Stevens was just an awesome guy to deal with and his knowledge incredible. The early FET 500 Customs with the pine cabinets had some extra mojo too in my opinion.
Over the years I've had one Evans Hybrid 300, three FET 500 HVs and two FET 500 LVs. All have sounded awesome..!!

In 1973 I bought what Jim Evans told me was the 1st small cab FET500 in Louisiana. I believe the price was $960. A whole lot of money in those days, but after hearing and playing my friend Tommy
Loften’s large cab I knew I had to have one. Since then I’ve almost never been without one. Like Tiny I always preferred the brown faced HV model at one point using 2 on gigs with one for a spare. Great amps IMHO
