Hello forum mates,
how do you practice/what is your technique to speed up picked rakes (3 notes,2-1-T) on a downscale. Upscale is easy to handle.
For me it's like running fast forward and trying to do reach the same speed in the opposite direction.
Tips and tricks are very appreciated. |

This is not exactly what you want, but is my way of doing rakes via the bar. I'd still like to hear other's answers.

Practice! And, you don't even need a guitar to practice this type of exercise. You can practice the finger movements by simply drumming your fingers on a table, or on your knee! After what will seem like years, and you've done this several thousand times, you'll be able to do this 3-note roll with surprising speed. (But it will likely take a couple of weeks.)
Would you believe between 3 and 5 times...a second?
Yes!!! 
Also, I call these moves "rolls", not rakes, as "rakes" are more commonly done with a single pick, dragging it across the strings. |

@ Dale: that's exactly a great example and perfectly done by you.
@ Donny: yes indeed, I've already practiced using a table without picks. Works good but when trying on the steel, it doesn't work that quick.
Perhaps I have to find a way to grab the strings with the picks in a different way.
And for sure it needs more practicing. |

Detlef, rakes of any kind whether picked or strum’d, at least in my experience are usually on adjacent strings so on a strum rake you may grab more than three strings, you may grab 4 or 5 and on a forward strum rake maybe more. For the picked rake I would just pick three strings like 3, 4 and 5 with middle finger index and thumb and just get comfortable with that motion, getting those in succession from the third to the fifth string, it’ll happen eventually.
