I hadn't seen an update on Jody in a couple of years, I hope he's doing well. He reached out to me a couple of times about some vintage Fender guitars I had and was very friendly. He shared this one amusing story with me that I always remember. Because of the idiosyncratic way Jody sends messages sometimes I edited and cobbled this together from 2 or 3 messages, but it's all Jody. I had a 1950s Stringmaster with the name "Gloria" in the control cavity, and this is what Jody told me:
Brad there was ONLY ONE GLORIA and that Gloria in your guitar is Gloria Fuentes, long time Fender production gal. She's gone now...
Here is a quick story. Gloria, she weighed at least 300 poinds and then some and was 5 foot tall. One day I was in the factory and Freddy Tavares (GREAT STEEL PLAYER) was there. Freddy asked, "Hey where's Gloria?" Another guy shouted "Her boyfriend went to pick her up!" and Freddy replied "Well damn, he better make two trips!"
I just laughed out loud at that. Now these days are so hypersensitive some might think that story is mean, but Jody didn't mean it that way, and all of us with a vintage Fender guitar love Gloria, especially if she put her name in our guitars. |
