Sorry to say, but chris passed away last night. (and I know there is a section for this, but could you please leave this here for a day or two? Thanks) He had been having trouble recently with his leukemia and it just took off suddenly. He went into he hospital on the first and it went downhill rapidly leading him to exit from here.
Chris was the bravest guy I've known. He faced his illness with a sense of humor and sarcasm. He not only had leukemia but went through a depressingly painful case of throat cancer as well as the one that affects your lymph nodes some years back. He kept his wit and genuine modesty through it all. He was fearless.
He was also a hell of a player when he was healthy or at least not sick. He played a great Telecaster and wrote some wonderful songs. He was a hardcore honky-tonker and had little use for those who pretended to be a member of that cohort without paying those dues.
When he was first really ill, most of the Merle Haggard band came down from Redding and played a benefit for him in the last honkytonk in the region. He was well loved by people who could really pick and knew who chris really was at heart.
I'm going to miss him because as cantankerous as he was, we were really good friends. He had a heart of gold and was intelligent well beyond most of those he met along the way. He was modest by half and had a gentleman's manners.
Goodbye chris ya rat bastid. We are going to miss you and your dry wit and sardonic sense of humor.

Damn! 
That was quick! He was just on here a few days back or so. I know he could be a bit abrasive, but sometimes we need someone like that to provide balance and keep the rest of us on our toes.

Tom, I'm glad you posted this here 'cause I just think of Chris as a steel player, not someone who's "Gone Home".
I'm really sorry to hear this. I never met Chris but I know he was having a rough go of it. His toughness was obvious - he was tough enough here to let it all hang out and just let the chips fall where they may. OK, he and I definitely didn't always agree and he could go off the rails now and then. But I always knew where he stood and I was also sure that, underneath, he was trying to do the right thing.

I've just played a very heartfelt "Spanish Harlem". I could hear him say "Keep Going". Chris was always encouraging! I miss him.
