The great Al Bragg of Ottawa, playing his wraparound in a duo with Frank Koller - in my opinion, this is tone and approach that's hard to beat. Al doesn't play out much these days, but it's been a privilege to hear him and a pleasure to know such a great guy.

I'm not sure about Frank's guitar, but it appears he is using a Carr amplifier. I believe they're based in North Carolina.
I've seen Al use several different amps including the usual Peavey steel amps, but I might guess that he's using an Evans amp for this. He always sounds great no matter what.
I saw Al's steel so many times from the audience before I ever got a close look at it. Al's not really into the whole years/designs thing - but he told me that steel had "this thing" that no other steel he's ever played had.
It still cracks me up when I think of the first time I got a chance to really look closely at it. I said "Oh, man, this thing is a wraparound !" And Al said:
"A what ?"

I spoke with Al today and mentioned this thread.
He told me he used a Sarno Black Box, a Roland ADXT 489 amp, and a Sennheiser E906 mic. I know he often uses a Boss eq unit as well to dial in the finer points.
It also bears mentioning that the recording was done by Dave Poulin at studioNINE productions.

It does seem to have this thing . . . or these things . . . nice things. (I'm afraid if I sat down to it, those things might go away . . . or at least be less apparent.)

Thanks John for those very kind words and everyone else
for checking out the video. Pat... the amp was a Roland Cube
80XL on the Black Panel setting.
John L.... Great hearing from you old friend, the guy who
got me going on the steel back in Toronto in '73 (I think).
WOW! Has it been that long? Hope things are good with you
"way out west".

Hey, no problem, Al. I was glad to hear you playing and to see you in the video. Iβm semi-retired and living in the small town of Black Diamond just southwest of Calgary. Itβs quiet and unhurried. Still picking a bit with a trad country band and just trying to make it to the next decade! |
