I recently picked up a HH 15" combo and would like to put new tubes in it. what are the best brand of tubes for this amp ? I think I need (2) 12ax7 and (1) 12at7. i emailed Tim who sent me a manual but it didnt specify what brand of tube to purchase. thanks..

I experimented with several tubes in V1 before settling on the "new production" Mullard 12AX7. I'm happy with that. I've always felt that the first tube the signal encounters is the most crucial for tone. The middle tube in my amp is still the stock Ruby.

The stock reverb circuit was too intense for my taste, so Tim suggested the ECC832 from JJ Electronic for the reverb tube. It's a strange beast - one side has 10x the gain of the other - but it does exactly what I wanted. https://tubedepot.com/products/jj-ecc832-12dw7-preamp-vacuum-tube.

Some people change tubes like they change strings. I don't. The tone of a good tube doesn't change; if they wear out, they distort badly for a short time and then stop working. And that almost never happens. I played a Mesa/Boogie every weekend for 20 years and I still use it now and then. It still has the same tubes as when I bought it, and it still sounds the same to my ears. The only reason I changed tubes in the Milkman was to get the exact sound and gain structure I wanted. I'll probably never change them again.

If an amp sounds good, don't change the tubes. If you must, consider just changing V1 (the first 12AX7). That's where most of the tone happens.

Ruby tubes in mine as well.

Bob, I know it’s pretty subjective and often difficult to describe but are there any obvious tonal differences you can comment on between using a Mullard vs Ruby in V1?

Tonal, not that I recall. It's been a while. I think that the difference was gain related. The Mullard didn't break up as easily on a hot signal.

B0b, John Ambrose Fleming couldn't have said it better. Advice every tube amplifier user should live by. And i personally think way too many caps are changed needlessly as well.

Bob i'm going to print this out in big print, laminate it, put your name and date on the bottom, and hang it proudly in my music room.

In this photo, is V1 on the left and the reverb tube on the right?
