Hey Team,
Fresh steel learner coming in hot! I just started Paul Franklin's online curriculum and am learning on a Carter Starter. The CS has a bit different of a knee lever set up than the guitars paul is referencing so I was wondering if anyone knew of where to find resources on the different chord voicings that the knee levers create (ex. A+B= 4th chords since a raises 5&10 a whole step and B raises 3&6 a half step.)
I hope this language makes sense. There is a lot of new terminology here to remember and learn. |

Biggest difference on the Carter Starter vs a more traditional E9 copedent is the RKL doesnt lower String 6 a whole step ( and raise the top two strings )but instead lowers the B’s a half step. Everything else is common Emmons set up with LKL raising 8 and 4 a half step and LKR lowering 4 and 8 half step and RKR lowering 2nd string a half step |

I haven't seen the Franklin course, but I'm pretty sure you have all the changes on your guitar you need to proceed. It has all of the bread-and-butter changes that make up 95% of your playing.
NOTE: Here in Steel-World, different players put common changes in different locations on the guitar and that may be tripping you up here (i.e., the E-lower lever is on LKR on your guitar, but others may have that change assigned to a different lever. It doesn't matter as long as you know what lever to hit on your guitar to get the same sound the instructor is getting when he hits a lever that's maybe in a different location on his guitar).
To translate the Carter Starter's knee locations to generic names that are common across most E9 pedal steels:
LKL = E-raise (sometimes called the 'F lever')
LKR = E-lower (sometimes called the 'D lever,' but also sometimes 'E lever'. Safer to refer to it using it's function to avoid confusion: "E-lower")
RKL = B-lower (sometimes called the 'X lever')
RKR = D#-lower, or 2nd-string lower (sometimes called the 'D', but also sometimes called the 'E')
As you can see, the 'D' and 'E' lever names are disputed. Different people use, say, "the D lever" to refer to different things, so there is no standard on that particular part of the naming scheme. But that's OK. Looking at instructional material that uses that type of alphabet-letter naming scheme for the levers, you can easily figure out if they are referring to lowering the E notes on strings 4 & 8... versus lowering the D# on string 2.
To answer you question about common chords, here is a list in the open position:
