I'm in Texas, thinking about buying a steel from a guy in Australia. Perhaps totally insane - yes - but it's just a real nice one and I feel good about the instrument and the deal itself.

That said - any advice on this kind of shipping ordeal - just in terms of what to watch out for/what to expect - logistically or cost-wise? (Is it gonna wind up being another $1,000 or something?)

Any "best way to go" recommendations I might pass along to the seller?

For context - it's a 10-string.

Thanks!

I'd say skip it. It will cost too much. The only way to do it affordably would to find a shipper who ships LCL (Less tha Container Load) to the US and then will find a carrier to get it to you. But even that might be expensive, and will take 2-3 months. Find one in the US. The rest of the steel guitar world (including Australia) is jealous that the US has accesss to so many great steels! They often have to pay big bucks to get stuff shipped to them because it's just not available in their country. That's my advice anyway. And you might get hit by a customs charge when it gets to the US. Maybe it was made in the US, but unless you have the paperwork the customs guys insist on to prove it, you might get hit up for it.

I would get a price from DHL. And then add customs, duties etc.

There must be about 500 steels in Aus and about 15,000 in the USA.

It's just a matter of patience.

Well, got an estimate for $750 through DHL, which doesn’t feel worth it so I think I’m gonna skip it after all. Thanks anyways for y’all’s thoughts!
