Hi all, I have a Peavey Austin 400. With the reverb up to about 5, it begins to hum. A low , bassy hum at first, barely noticeable, but it grows and grows until it's loud. I've insulated the reverb tank from the chassis with towels, etc, but to no effect. I can keep the reverb on 3 and it's ok. I've just started using my Holy Grail instead of risking it at shows, but it would be nice to figure it out. I've had this happen in multiple practice rooms and venues. Any ideas? I know very little about amps. The only thing I've done to this one is to open it up and spray the pots with cleaner.

this can be a couple of things

1) remove the TANK RCA connectors, clean the connectors ,both tank and wired RCA plugs

2) if the reverb connector is plugged into the chassis ( common) clean that connector and the chassis connector pins.

3) it can be the reverb tank, internal connectors or the small transducers have reached end of life. It happens.

Have you examined the tank ? Make sure the inner pan is supported equally at all four corners, and moves freely. Tanks are cheap, you can replace it. I highly recommend the MOD brand replacement. Better build, better sound, priced right .

Thank you! I didn't realize tanks could wear out.

They are mechanical, the insides of the tanks move, suspended by 4 springs in the corners. That movement is what produces the crashing noise when the amp is moved, or someone jumps on a bandstand.

A spring can come unhooked, and it’s easily reattached. A spring can break. ( they’re small. ) once you eyeball it , I t’s an easy , obvious , fix.

Lots of guys go with the MOD replacement. It’s better.

I have a 40 year old Peavey Backstage that generates a hum resulting in feedback even with NO input chords.

After reading this thread I discovered that the reverb knob would stop it. The reverb tank is loose on one end.

Also, make sure the tank is wrapped and covered
