What is the best recommended method for cleaning input jacks on amplifiers and volume pedals? How often? Any common mistakes to try and avoid? What sort of brushes and cleaning solutions are the most common?

Thanks.

I recommend using 'Deoxit' cleaner and LUBE. Spray onto a 1/4" jack and insert and reinsert it three or four times. Sometimes follow up the procedure by inserting a small wire brush and rotating it gently.

I second David's advice.

If you need to go the next step inside an amp, find a post that Ken Fox posted a few years back on how to service old Peavey amps that need both cleaning and re-tensioning the switching jacks. I've lost count of the Peavey amps I have brought back to life following Ken's procedure.

Deoxit all the way for any contact cleaning needs. Pots, jacks, etc.

A little goes a long way.

The Deoxit F5 or D5 are very good, but ridiculously expensive, so I reserve them for volume controls and other pots. For switches, relays, and jacks, I use CRC 2-26. It works just as well, and it's less than half the price. One large spray can will last you for years! Cool

For input jacks, keep in mind that with very old or high-use jacks, the plating on the contacts might get rubbed off, and then they cannot be deoxed or cleaned, they have to be replaced.
