Hi All. My wife is a dobro player but has an EH100 that hasn't been used for quite a while. I was going to restring it for her, but to our dismay, the top has started peeling off the body. I want to take it to a repair person to have it reglued. But the thing is the pots are in bad shape and trying to get TV tuner cleaner down the shafts never helped.
I'd like to replace the pots at this time. Taking the top the rest of the way off doesn't appear feasible because of the fingerboard. Is it possible to access the pots by removing the back of the guitar (ungluing it)? Do any of you have any experience with the innards of this steel? Of course I'm concerned that the cost of these repairs will exceed its value. Thanks for any suggestions. |

I've never worked on an EH100 but on most of these guitars the pots are accessible by removing knobs and nuts from the pots and input jack, removing the pickup (you may have to tilt it out of the hole) and pulling the pots and harness out with the pickup. I'd recommend tying some strong thread around the threads of the pots and jack after removing the nuts so that you can gently guide those components back to the holes after servicing. If your repair guy works on electric hollowbody 6-strings, he'll know what to do.

| Thanks Bill. That might work. Actually it makes sense that that was how the electronics were originally installed…after the wood body was assembled. |

can you post some close up pics of the places on the top that are an issue.
i cannot envision needing to remove anything wooden on the guitar. reglue maybe, but not remove. |

New here to the forum and I don’t know how to upload pics yet.
I’m going to go with Bill Sinclair’s suggestion that the pots etc can come out thru the pickup cavity and see what the repair tech says today.
Since I loosened the string tension the separation gap is only about 1/8”. When I first discovered the problem the gap was greater and I could see that bridge screws were pulling out of the wood block in the otherwise hollow cavity. The three screws holding the bridge are surprisingly small (compared to the bolts on a Les Paul). The economical solution may be to just replace them with longer screws. Otherwise the body will have to be further opened up to fill the holes and redrill. |

Just got the guitar back from the shop. The repairman was able to remove and replace the electronics through the pup opening. He replaced the pots. I don’t think he ever saw an old steel guitar like this and he enjoyed working on it. He even did a bit of research on its history.
Anyway it sounds great and my wife is happy to have it back. Thanks to Bill Sinclair and Bill Hatcher for their input. |
