Topic: Carter U12 Changer Question |

Researching into buying a used Carter Uni and I've noticed that changers are either triple raise/lower or 4 up/2 down (unless I'm mistaken).
Wondering if this had to do with the move to BCT in the 90's ? - or some other reason ? |

4 up and 3 down would likely be to accommodate compensators.

BCT was around long before they came out with the 4r/2l changer.

Should be more like a 4-3 changer but they made them to fit how they were ordered.
Compensators typically flatten the F#s and 6th string for the A/F positions.

| I don't think Carter built a 4/3 changer...only 4 over 2 or 3 over 3. |

IDK about the Carter Universal, but my 10 string D-10s have an extra 11th 'dummy' finger for half stops, and, presumably, compensation. Does yours have a 13th finger?

Every Carter I have seen (s10,sd10,d10,s12,d12) have all had the dummy finger half stop. Never heard of it being used for compensation. Would be interested in hearing more about that. I did find the feel of the half stop weak and "iffy". I cut one loop off the spring and have a firm half stop, but not too firm to make the full step drop too hard.

Hmm after the second cup of coffee, I realize what I wrote was a misstatement about compensating with the extra finger.
Ive been meaning to try a half stop setup with pedal A on E9 and pedal 8 on C6. Anyone ever done that?

As a matter of fact, I tried the half stop on my A pedal on my Carter. It was way too hard to feel accurately with my foot. Also messed with the real slow movements giving a bump along the way. I removed it in maybe a week. Maybe cutting 2 loops off the half stop finger would give enough tension on the pedal to be able to quickly hit the half stop accurately. But that would eliminate any smooth movement on the whole step raise. It would also make the half stop on string 2 really hard. I first cut 2 loops off the half stop spring for a firmer stop on string 2. It made the final push to C# so hard it was uncomfortable and guitar wanted to move. I replaced the spring with 1 loop cut off and it is perfect.
