I prefer the wound because I like the idea of having a major triad (3-4-5) of plain strings and a major triad (6-8-10) of wound strings.
A plain 6th also sounds "boingy" to me, at times.  |

| I like to use a 22 wound, it stays in tune better, and has a softer sound that blends without sticking out sonically. Your choice of pickups could affect the result, too. On the downside, I found a wound 22 breaks more often than a plain. Try both in a live band situation, you'll hear what works best. |

Are there any benefits to using a lower gauge wound sixth string like .020? Has anyone tried that or is the consensus that .022 wound is most suitable? Thanks.

| I've never had a breakage problem with that string. I use a .022 or a .024, and prefer the latter. |

Wound 6th never was right for my country rock playing style. I felt that the plain 6th was more pronounced, that the wound string wasn't as strong sounding, although the wound string had a "sweeter" tone if that makes any sense... Also, it made the B pedal harder and longer to pedal, and didn't drop down to F# as easily on my G#=F# pedal-[typically 4th pedal on my steels]. Much longer throw.
Its great for some guys I realize that, but it never worked at all for my copedant or my playing style... bob

| A nickel .022w for me because of it’s tuning stability. It took some serious adjustments to work, but once set, no problem at all lowering a full tone on the 6th string. Bob Carlucci is correct, as it does need more pedal and lever travel. I play a lot of modern country and not really unhappy with my tone. |

| I landed on .022W as 6th string decades ago, based primarily on tone balance with the other strings. Lowering to F# is a stretch, but has not been a real problem on any of my PSGs. That I also lower the .0115 3d string to F# on same lever on most of my PSGs, makes syncing a wound 6th to the 3d easy as these two strings need about the same scissor-travel. |

Wow, I never considered using a 0.022 wound or otherwise.
All my purchased universal sets, SIT, come with a 0.020. I'll have to try a 0.022. |
