Hello out there,
I don't know whether this question already came up here in the forum.
Did somebody tried a TrueTone PU on a ShoBud?
What experiences have been made? |

I think a lot of folks use Truetones in their Sho Buds. Pretty sure Jerry Wallace aimed at the Sho Bud pickup sound. I have them in my Super Pro, had them in my Professional and 6139 as well. |

I have a Professional and a Crossover with Wallace Truetones. The sound is exactly what I think a Bud should sound like. _________________ RICK ABBOTT

In fact , Rick has the very professional of which I spoke. When Ricky Davis was setting it up he offered either the original Sho Bud pickups or those Truetones, and he concurred that the Truetones were the better choice. |

Many many years ago; me and Jerry Wallace worked together to come up with the PERFECT TrueTone for the Sho~bud sound; and after experimenting with 7 different windings; we came up with the perfect Truetone and It will always have the Ohms on a sticker on the bottom and it; is:
17,500 ohms full and if you get the extra winding coil tap wire(red wire)that is:
12,500 ohms
We lost Jerry (Gerald Wallace) February, 2020 RIP Jerry, and so those particular Truetone won't be newly made anymore; so look hard with that info I just gave you.

Personally, I liked the original Bud pickups better than anything else in a Bud, problem is, by now so many are microphonic, or damaged..Nothing out there is as good as a Truetone in a Bud if you want it to sound like a Bud, except maybe something custom wound by Jackson Steel Guitars. Years ago Jerry used to rewind Bud original pickups, and that was the best way to keep an old Bud sounding as it should..Later he stopped doing rewinds, but still his own Truetones kept the Bud sound intact... I see SO many Buds out there with humbuckers wound to 20-21 K...Breaks my heart... They just don't sound the same, I don't care what anyone says.. At this point I think a truetone would be the best replacement for a Bud pickup, IF you can find someone willing to part with one... When jerry left us, there was a huge hole left in the steel guitar pickup world... I loved his pickups...bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Hello Ricky, thanks for chiming in.
I don't know what kind of PU is in my 6166 nor how much Ohms both of them have. Pretty sure you can provide details on that.
Apart from the windings are there any other differences e.g.magnets ...
Would you recommend to do something in this direction? |

Hi Detlef; here's a pic of a Truetone in a ShoBud LDG. You can see Jerry used different diameter Magnets that reacted with certain windings of certain wire. That's as much as I know about them and Like Bob just posted I agree; they are the best replacement single coil pickup for Sho~bud.

If you actually need/want a good pickup for a shobud, I would contact these guys, and see if they will sell you a pickup... Their guitars sound very close to the original sho bud steels, and with good reason of course.

Nice!!... are these mostly custom order, as in customer specifies impedance, coil tap etc, and will you give recommendations based on the sound a customer is looking for?... Your pickups on the website site look great.... _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Bob, yes I wind to any impedance and work with people to figure out what will give them the tone they are describing. _________________ Scott Swartz

Hello out there,
thanks for the pics and the links.
At least it's good to know that there is replacement available just in case it's needed.
All of you have a Merry Xmas !

So in theory you could wind a modern size single coil that could come close to the sound of early stratosphere pickups that were in the early Permanents? |

If you know the resistance measurement of those I am sure I could get close. _________________ Scott Swartz

Bret,
Clay Alden has a pickup that is probably as close to the original Stratospheric as you’re likely to fine. The new Emmons wrap arounds will be using these pickups and a good friend of mine just put a set on his ‘66 bolt on. They are phenomenal. |

Scott Swartz rewound 2 single coils for my Push-Pull. Man did that steel come alive with them! I highly recommend Scott! He sure KNOWS what he's doing!

Hi Detlef,
Gruss, Norbert |
