What is the most economical way to ship a empty steel guitar case these days? |

I recently purchased a used case from Pat Moore here on the forum... We discussed how to ship, and I told him I was fine shipping unboxed, just put some shipping tape around it. He wisely added two pieces of carboard that covered the latches and curled around on the top and bottom of the case about two inches. Worked like a charm. |

I've sold two empty steel cases. In both I still boxed them and they got there OK. With UPS, size more than weight determines price.
I sold a lap steel and shipped it last week UPS. It was 15 lbs (boxed) but because of the box size UPS charged 60lb weight. |

Yeah, it's called dimensional weight. You're charged for the space your item takes up besides the actual weight.
I check the online freight calculators regularly as they flip flop sometimes.
The big 3....USPS, FedEx and UPS. None of which are very economical anymore. Sometimes it's cheaper to take a road trip if anywhere in the region. |

Thanks Jack, Jack & Jerry for responding. I ended up shipping it USPS (the only place i tried).
The empty case weighed 17.5 lbs, & measured 38X10X15. The cheapest rate I could get was $62.35
I did completely encase it with a heavy cardboard all the way around. This was double what I was expecting |
