Dennis,

I've used Ray's "chrome over alloy" (flight) legs for years. He's great to deal with, and his products are fine as well. =IMO=

I can't speak to frequent travel or heavy usage, though.

A set of these legs should be 4-5 lbs.+/- less than steel legs.

Just bought a set of COA legs from Ray a few weeks ago. He's definitely still in business and the service was excellent. The entire transaction from order to receiving the legs was just a few days.

Outer diameter is standard 7/8". I don't know the specific alloy type, but I assume it's 6061 aluminum. Wall thickness is ~0.080" (vs. ~0.056 for typical steel leg). The 1/2-13 threaded top plug is steel but the clutch nut is alloy. The clutch thread is 7/8-14, this is coarser than the typical mic stand clutch thread, which I believe is 7/8-27. I assume this is to make the threads more durable over time with the softer material. Alloy leg weighs 0.97 lbs, a random regular steel leg the same length weighs 1.64 lbs, so you'll save a little under 3 lbs total for the set.

Thanks Ian
Seems the only alum tube I can get here at 7/8”. (22mm) has a side wall of about ¼” (6mm). At 0.5 kg (1.1 lb) per 600mm (2 β€˜) leg not much of a weight saving.
