The only thing I know about Melobar lap steels are what I’ve read. Local guy has one for sale, a rattler I think. I realize It’s all personal preference, but does anybody have any serious negatives about these steels? Appreciate your help. _________________ http://www.fentonstwang.com/fr_home.cfm |

The link is a original LS model with a Paul Barth pickup not a Rattler model (I know it's listed as a Rattler Michael so it's confusing, and the post is closed so it can't be corrected), difference is the Rattler was a flat stain with a M213 Kent Armstrong pickup, fixed strat style bridge, stock Grover keys. We did a I.D. models page on the melobartedblogspot.com site so you should be able to determine which model the guy has for sale. The Rattler lap steel was the most produced but seldom come up for sale, they were a good workhorse guitar and most I've seen have been really used. As far as negative toward the guitars we built Steven, I know there's a couple of forumites that don't like me for leaning toward rock and blues, and the guitars sound lean a bit that way too. Link to sound bite and look on youtube. Hope that helps.

Thanks Ted! This helps lots. Melobar lap steels always interested me but I never had a chance to see one or play it. I’ll check out the info today. Also, the rock and blues nod is good to know. Thanks again _________________ http://www.fentonstwang.com/fr_home.cfm |

I enjoyed your Fentons video at the Shanty on your website, fun stuff!! I'd steer you toward the 24.5 scale = the Melobar Lap Steel I think you'd really like, if you can find it, is the SXL model with the XL500 Bill Lawrence pickups we made in the mid 90's, it would nail the sound I think you are looking for but they are hard to come by, just the old original XL500 pickup (usually tell by the chrome case) is getting super expensive and very few come on the market. Bill told me clear back in the 90's he couldn't get the quality wire and magnets those had anymore. Keep on pick'n! _________________ old Melobar guy |

I think I finally found out what model mine is. A red SLS, except it has different tone and volume controls. I purchased in 98. Other steels have come and gone but I still have my Melobar |
