I play old honky tonk mostly. My SKH Legrande with Lawrence 710s sounds great on E9. However, when I'm on C6, what I mostly want is a sound like a Fender lap steel.
I wonder if the Lawrence XR-16 in single coil mode will get me close, or would I need a dedicated single coil wound to 9k or so or is this just an impossible dream? _________________ "You call that thing a guitar?" |

You will probably want a single coil pickup with Alnico 2 or 5 pole pieces, with about 8000 winds. Because the pickup is approximately 1.67 times the length of a 6 string pickup, the resistance of the coil would probably be in the 10K range. _________________ Michael Brebes

Well I have an SKH LeGrande , and the 18K pickup is tapped at 9K or so . Gets a much more Fendery sound in the tapped position . |

Who made your pickup? Was it custom wound or off the shelf? _________________ "You call that thing a guitar?" |

I think it's an Emmons pickup, looks like one . I bought it used , and replaced the E66 that was on my guitar with the tapped single coil pickup . Much more to my liking . |

I’ve been looking for more or less the same thing and set this little Lamar up for 8 string A6.Ive been experimenting with a Sentell lap steel pickup and it sounds pretty cool. The pickup is wound around 9.7 and is wide enough to cover 10 strings if needed. The bar style also negates any string spacing issues. The only down side is its not a traditional mount and I had to Improvise with some Velcro.

Lynn,
I can make a tapped single coil, for example here is a pic of an 8 string tapped single coil for lap steel that I recently made 3 of for a Remington triple console. I can easily do a 10 string wide mount version.
Splitting the humbucker may be close enough, it will definitely be thinner and brighter, but you will want to use the coil that is farther from the changer. You can check which coil is active by touching a pole piece with a screwdriver - the active coil will make a big thunk noise through the amp and the inactive will be very quiet. _________________ Scott Swartz

Do XR-16 PUs split to single coil?
