They say there is a move away from pedal 4 on C6 ( A to B on Strings 4 and . I don't use it much and I wonder why so many steels come with that. Does anyone know of a recording that would demonstrate this, or could explain a chord or lick this would be useful for? I'm thinking about putting a different change on this pedal on the Excel U E9/C6 set up I'm ordering. |

Buddy Emmons sometimes raised string 6 (E to F) with pedal 4. I've used that change for years (raising both Es) while some other players do a reverse pedal 6 or raise string 10 (C to D) along with the E to F raise.
as for the classic pedal 4 (As to B) I have it on a knee lever but don't use it nearly as much as the E to F change. _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |

To me it seems significant that in his Basic C6 course Buddy Emmons offers a full exploration of pedals 5-8 but doesn't mention 4 at all.
It would appear that at his time of writing P4 was already on the way out - a double puzzle as I believe BE was largely responsible for it being there in the first place! _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Great information guys. I appreciate it. It's amazing that it has been such a standard thing for so long. |

I don't much care what others are doing. I don't use it a lot, but I do like the sound, and I can't think of anything more useful to put in it's place.
So...it stays.

I like the boo-wah pedal on position 4. Put the original pedal 4 with a half and whole tone raise, on a knee lever with a half stop, actually only string 4 for me, and do something else with pedal 8.
My old friend Boogie had strings 8 and 9 lowers [A to G] and [F to E] on pedal 8 for majors across the bottom strings. He used that for thumb style stuff which I don't do, but a lot of rock and blues rhythms work well there for me or anything where you want 1,3 5s in that register.
I also have the 5 & 10 whole tone lower on the E9th neck on pedal 8. With a little practice leaving the vp, along with a kl lower 6 a whole tone, there's the Franklin pedal. |
