Hi, I recently picked up a Emmons Legrande 3 SD10 and the pickup is extremely noisy. I've checked all the grounds and cant find anything loose or out of place. This is solid 60 cycle hum and is really bad. Is this common for these guitars or is a bad pickup possible. I believe this is the factory pickup thats in this guitar,
Thanks

Ron, put a ohm meter on it and see what the ohmmage is. It probably has a stock single coil on it which can be noisey. I'd recommend a Bill Lawrence 705 humbucker. RP _________________ Emmons SKH Le Grande, '73 Fender P/J bass, Tick tack bass, Regal high strung, USA Nashville 112.

Hi Ron. I experienced the same issue and replaced the stock pickup which solved the problem. It's was very annoying. Jim Palenscar sent me George L which worked very well and eliminated that noise. |

From what I understand Not all humbucking pick ups
Will work in a Legrande 111,
Because of the cabinet drop de tune mechanism ,
Curious myself as to which ones work?
Anyone know, or have experience with
Which ones work and don’t work?

Greg...send an email to Boo Bernstein. He's on the Forum, and has been on a p/u quest for his LIII. He's had to fit a bunch of them in there. |

Thanks for all the info!!
I measured the pickup and it's reading roughly 20k. I'm going to change the jack out tonight and just go ahead and re-solder everything and make sure my connections are good.
I've thought about trying to pickup a 705 or trying to find a 108 for the guitar but I really like the way the original pickups looks. I know its trivial but I like the look of the original pickups with the big single pole pieces. |

Does your steel make the same hum everywhere you set it up ?
Those original pickups are great if they're not messed up. Nothing better as far as single coils go. _________________ Bob |

Bob,
I didn't notice is much when had the steel at practice using it with an amp but it definitely overbearing when using the headphone jack on the Stereo Steel. I'll try running it through my Revelation Preamp rig and see if has the same results.
I do love the sound of the pickup though and I'd hate to change it.

Make sure you still have a ground wire that goes to a screw somewhere on the changer, or something else metal that is contact with the strings/changer. If that wire got clipped or removed, the noise can go way up. _________________ Bringing steel guitar to the bukid of Negros Oriental! |

Douglas, I took a look and there is no ground wire that goes directly to the changes. I did check the output jack ground to the changes and its appears grounded. I'll add one just for extra grounding and see if it clears up. |
