I've always assumed it stands for "original" or "older", because it's based on the original Newman tuning. In fact, the Peterson documentation says:
Quote: |
0E9 is an older tuning devised by Jeff Newman. |
By comparison, SE9 is the newer Jeff Newman tuning. I don't know what the "S" stands for, but it's essentially same as OE9 except raised 9.8 cents. |

Seemed to me O Open was tuning Es with pedals up and SE was Es with pedals down. _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

Ultimately, with all respect to the people at Peterson, I don't think I've ever seen an instruction, a manual, a procedural, that didn't leave me with as many questions as it answered. *shrug* I sort of gave up a while ago. |

I have drifted more towards semi E.T. as the years went on.
Except I tune my 3rd string by ear. _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

I shrug like Jon Light. I just use SE9-set it and forget it. It sounds great.
My inversion with the E string raised and A pedal down is off a bit, but when I get a guitar with splits or compensators or whatever I'm sure it could be fixed.
I've tried the OE9 and the Emmons, my ears can't hear the grass grow (or maybe I'm not there yet). |

OE9 and SE9 are essentially the same tuning. The offsets are the same, but SE9 is set to a reference 9.8 cents higher. I've heard the reasoning is partly to compensate for cabinet drop, and partly so the flattened notes aren't quite so flat compared to other instruments tuned to ET. Half the sweetened notes are a little sharp, and half are a little flat.
