Hey guys, if you look at photos of this guitar's case you'll clearly see the name Johnny Cox under the stickers... while he was with Cal Smith?! Incredible find... somebody's going to be a lucky Sho-Bud owner soon... located in Florida. Assuming this isn't Johnny selling this.. and I remember him saying recently that he was looking for a 1-up/1-down D10 8x4, early 70s Sho-Bud..

The current owner is just looking to “flip” this guitar. It sold at an auction about two months ago in Florida, so the current owner is selling it just as a short term investor (I would like to add for the record, that there’s nothing wrong with that).

A friend of mine who collects country music memorabilia and comes to a lot of our Marty shows asked me about this guitar before the auction and asked what I thought the value would be. I said it was very hard to tell without a first hand inspection of the instrument’s condition. I told him I would be shy to bid on it without being able to inspect it first, or to have someone who knows steels look it over beforehand (given the age and fact that it looks like it hasn’t been played or properly maintained in years).

The guitar sold at the auction for, I believe, just under 2K after all the commissions and fees were paid.

This might be useful information to anybody looking to haggle over this instrument, and if you are in the area where it is being sold and could give it a look over first, this might be a great opportunity to get into a classic December 1971 Sho~Bud Professional at a potentially fair price.

I will also add, if Dumplin wanted to re-acquire this instrument, it would be certainly not mandatory but incredibly decent of anybody in the area to help him require this guitar, if he should so want it.

Chris is correct about the date being a 1971. The pickups are from the late 60's through early 70's. By 1973 S~B was using the 3-screw mounted pickups rather than the 2-bolt thru-coil mounted pickups on this guitar.

The left-moving knee levers look original, but the right moving levers look to me to be a 1976 or later vintage.

I really wish you would re-title this post. It's very misleading.
